The Story Behind the CakeSafe® Arch Cake Design

This design was dreamed up by Eliza of Copper Fork Cakes. Inspired by architectural arches, historical doorways, and the surge of arch shapes showing up in wedding and event design, she created a beautiful and unique cake design to complement that aesthetic. How Do Arch Acrylic Cake Disks Work?

Since there are no arch shaped cake pans, you'll use the Arch Acrylic Disks as a guide to trim your cake into the arch shape. Because you're trimming the cake to customize your icing thickness, we don't offer additional icing thickness sizes for this shape.

Here are the basic steps:

• Build your cake vertically and use your Arch Acrylic Disks to trim your cake to the perfect arch shape. Don't forget to add at least two dowels running vertically while the arch is standing up.
• Once you have a perfect arch shape, trim an additional 1/8 to 1/4 inch around the perimeter depending on your preferred icing thickness.
• Crumb coat and chill the cake.
• Ice with your Arch Acrylic Disks as a guide for smooth, sharp edges. Most bakers do this with the cake still standing vertically. Optionally, you can lay your cake on its side — one disk on the bottom, one on top — but make sure your cake has been refrigerated overnight before tipping it on its side.
• Chill your cake before removing the Acrylic Disks so it's firm enough to stand up on its own. Optional: use bamboo skewers as additional dowels to attach your standing cake to a cardboard or foam core cake drum.

Of course there are other ways to accomplish the arch shape, so feel free to experiment and make it your own!

How Many Mini Arch Acrylic Cake Disks Do I Need?

CakeSafe® Arch Acrylic Cake Disks are available in a quantity of 1 or 2 disks per size. We strongly recommend purchasing 2 disks per size to create the arch shape. The single disk option is solely offered in case you lose one of your Arch Cake Disks.

Do CakeSafe® Mini Arch Acrylic Disks Have a Center Hole?

Yes — all CakeSafe® Arch Acrylic Cake Disks include a 3/8 inch center hole. Bakers use this hole to stabilize their cakes by threading a temporary dowel through it while they're icing. This is especially useful if you don't have time to refrigerate your assembled tier to set it before icing. Don't need it? No problem, the center hole has zero impact on how the disk performs.
